Jason Hendriks

Hey, I’m Jason!

My School of Splice goal

I’m learning how to build a content/product strategy that creates media that’s useful for our audience.

I’m the editor of Meld, a community serving the needs of international students in Melbourne. Connect with me on LinkedIn.

In this program, I’m learning

  1. How to survey my audience

  2. How to act on their feedback, and

  3. How to keep that door to feedback open

What I’ll need to do

I’m going to pull out some Post-Its. Or put these on a kanban board like Trello or Notion.

What are the different segments to my audience?

What problems do each of those segments want me to solve?

What content formats are they most receptive to?

Under each of these columns, I’ll put down my hunches, and make assumptions so I can test them.

For example, I might assume that I have three core audiences:

1. International folks planning to attend school in Melbourne
2. International folks currently attending school in Melbourne
3. Former international students in Melbourne

What are the top 2-3 things that each of these audiences would want solved? I could make more assumptions about that here, like “I wish I had an advisor who could help me with life stuff (apartments housing, student discounts) in my language”

I’ll write down names of 5 people that I think would be most insightful in helping answer those questions.

I’ll tell them what I’m trying to figure out with this exercise, ask them what I’m missing, or misunderstanding, in the assumptions I’ve made about their problems and my solution. I’ll make the changes.

I’ll create a survey form on Google Form, Typeform, whatever.

I’ll consolidate all the emails I have onto one mailing list, and then break my subscribers up into audience segments.

I’ll send out the survey out to all of them. (“Hey, we’re planning for 2022. We want to know: How can we be helpful to you? A thing to remember: the more specific my questions, the more specifically I can build utility and value for my audiences.)

I’ll add the link to my home page, and send it out to all our social channels.

I’ll start interpreting the survey results into actions.

What have I learned about your audience? What surprised me? What is the one thing I know I can quickly build for them in a month to delight them?

Now it’s time to write down my plan by picking 2 things I know I can quickly get moving in Q1. I’ll make them tangible — stuff I can break up into smaller parts so I can get some momentum and test and iterate quickly.
